Project Yellow Light/Hunter Garner Scholarship is a scholarship competition designed to encourage high school and college students to promote the need to embrace safe driving habits. Scholarship is open to legal residents of the 50 United States who are between 17 and 24 years of age and have experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian. Applicant must be currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a college, university or trade school.

The PFLAG San Diego County Scholarships

The scholarships are awarded to LGBTQ+ high school seniors continuing on to higher education or full-time undergraduate and graduate students through a competitive application and essay process. In addition to general scholarships, some are offered for specific areas of study: STEM, Art, Education, Community College, and Vocational Studies. Applicants should meet the following requirements: 

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for High School Seniors

  • Minimum 2.8 GPA for Undergraduate/Graduate Students

  • Be an established resident of San Diego County at time of application

  • LGBTQ+ high school senior continuing to full-time** undergraduate study or

  • LGBTQ+ full-time** graduate student

Scholarship recipients who remain in academic standing following their first year of college will earn an additional $5,000 scholarship for their second year of college Additionally, scholarship recipients will receive a laptop computer from Computers to Kids San Diego. Open to high school seniors who will enroll in either a two- or four-year college, have overcome personal obstacles and troubles in life associated with drugs or alcohol and have a strong commitment to setting and reaching life goals. Demonstrated athletic achievement, participation in organized sports, leadership ability, personal responsibility, academic growth and financial need.

American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized. It is open to children of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. Children of post-9/11 veterans having been assigned a combined disability rating of 50 percent or greater by the Department of Veterans Affairs also qualify. Each needs-based scholarship provides up to $20,000 for children of the fallen, and up to $5,000 for children of the disabled for undergraduate or post-graduate college.

Every year, the San Diego Chinese Women’s Association awards scholarships to selected outstanding students of Chinese descent who are attending high school in San Diego County.  Scholarships are open to both male and female applicants of at least one-quarter Chinese descent. Graduating high school seniors of Chinese descent to apply for merit or need based scholarships of $1500 if attending a 4-year college program or $1000 if attending a 2-year community college.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-American men.
